The Fenceman
the fenceman
stands upon the fence
looking left and right
wondering which way to go
in the dimness of the light

he has some friends
that wander there
he left them on the way
other friends
are on the right
he sees them when they pray

but he is just a fenceman
a commitment’s beyond his ken
the way he walks is teetering
for the path’s extremely thin

he tells himself, the narrow way
is the way that he must go
yet he finds it awfully crowded
as his recognition grows

the way he thought was narrow
is full of other fencemen, who,
just cannot make their minds up
to seek the way that’s true

he doesn’t want to be a sheep
nor does he wish to be a goat
so he teeters on the edge of faith
above a dangerous moat

something in his heart
is dimming to a gray
as he sadly turns upon his fence
and heads the other way

now all he sees are shadows
of the things that might have been
I hope I’ve learned a lesson
and won’t end up just like him

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Well Virginia, he who straddles fence could get hurt! Kind of like the guy that has taken the middle of the road, he got run over by traffic going in both directions. Nice write.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Walking the fence is both dangerous...and safe - for the path is already selected for you...by default.

Good read.
