Only the breath on her hands
blew warmth into that day.
For the walk we made
froze any chance for this night
to bring us deliverance.
I'd studied her face
countless times, and yet
not seeing significant moments
was the fatal flaw.
Behind her eyes hid the unspoken words,
it was irreparably broken and finished.

Our pace slowed,
in grudging acknowledgment
to this mockery played out
over our investment in time.
Stepping through the still
and dormant landscape
that trumpeted the fanfare
of our doom.
I cannot remember ever wanting
to feel something more
than this moment that hung
suspended in rote movement.

Absurdity ruled
over a repartee in silence,
no words to come as a balm
healing the quiet.
Skewed memories fueled my steps
keeping me from staying
abreast of her stride.
A chasm had formed then,
tearing intimacy away
from friends and lovers.

All that was left was the walk
played out for its finite completion.
As unfailingly, the night closed in
over our journey's end.
Nothing more would be promised
nor expected.

Walter, my dear friend, you write this sadness well. Nobody could add beauty to sorrow as you do.

Sadly this~
I was with you all the way.

I hope it will find it's place in the book that it is so deserving of.

I love to take those long walks, but the silence in some situations is deafening. This is a love story, poignant, and touched me deeply, as it took me back many years. Thank you for putting it here.

onion poetry, many many layers....

sounds a bit like a marriage gone wrong.  I like.

I am not a big fan you realize, and this poem is why.  Some relationships are just not meant to be sometimes.
