Meandering long country paths aside,
Lush fragrance hallows summer's sweet ascent.
Festoons of lilacs breathe of heaven's scent
Midst fingered breadth of weeping willows bide.
Unfettered fronds enchant a flowered tide
Like choirs of angels boughing in descent,
In harmonies with primrose breeze content
To stave travails duress has oft decried.

Securely held within maternal arms,
In tiers the willow only seems to weep.
Embraced as swaddling babe in rhythmic sway
Bouquets of lilac meld to willow's charms.
Once nestled in her heart's protective keep
Remembrances for fragrant winter's day.

This is beautiful, Nan.
It's so springish, refreshing,
and I hold great childhood memories
of hours of fun playing in the weeping willow
tree at home with my brothers. *s

Fantastic, Nan!  This is the springtime like I've never experienced it.  You should come stay at my place for a week or so, in the springtime, and see what it's like in Winnipeg... I've tried writing about patches of dead grass and filthy brown snow all over the streets, and ruining pairs of good jeans by walking pretty much anywhere and getting mud and gunk all over yourself.  I haven't seen a single flower so far.  And the trees are still naked.

Yours sounds so much nicer!  hehe...

Now of COURSE I'm going to vote for this, nanner... you think you could write a brilliant sonnet such as this one and not find it in the book?  I hope it gets in, even if it's your third submission (if I count right).  This is my favourite of your submissions so far.

I've never really doubted your talent for a second.     I'll just check three boxes now and hit "Submit."

the moth will be on it

wonderful lacing of rhyme, vocab and imagery,
this was pure poetry when read aloud.

Every year I go to as many Botanical Gardens as I can and am fortunate to have a few choices very near to home.  One of the reasons I love to go can be something you expressed in the following lines :
*****************************
Festoons of lilacs breathe of heaven's scent
Midst fingered breadth of weeping willows bide.
Unfettered fronds enchant a flowered tide
Like choirs of angels boughing in descent,

*****************************

A beautiful sonnet indeed and I proudly cast my vote with my hand raised high in the air.  I truely loved the this one.

Mark certainly picked the part that you wrote where it could only be a lilac!

These lines truly tugged at my heart, and held me there in a place of reverance for some reason:

Once nestled in her heart's protective keep
Remembrances for fragrant winter's day.

This whole poem was like a special planting of love that was almost celestial in nature, but your writing makes it that way I am sure.

Well Nan, I sure read this ooem in awe, for when a sonnet is written with such perfection all you can do is smile and sigh, and probably just give you a in appreciation of how you work your craft.
