The Gift

Every move is an effort
It is not so much that her steps are labored
It is the little calmaties of the day
that tear at her peace of mind

Like the rain that beats against weathered wood
Every day living beats down her fragile resistance
Her house protects her though it too is weary,
together they hold each other up

She is of a different world
Alone now in a place that is moving much too fast
She holds on to me and I steady her
giving assurance as much as I can

In her eyes there is sorrow and fear
but, there is also great strength
Her hands like porcelain are paper thin,
worn from years of tender touching
In her voice courage

She is in the autumn of her life
To look at her is to see myself
For I am of the age she was
  when we first met
To slow down time is a gift
  I cannot give
So we walk together
  her hand in mine..

SG, I don't know if this is written
about someone you know personally or
not. I do know though, that it shows
what a compassionate and caring heart
that you have. If it is personal, the
lady is very blessed to have you as
a friend. Thank you for sharing, and
you have my vote.

Heart Hugs,
Ethel

Ethel, Spirit,

Thank you both very much for your kind words. Yes, it is personal written from deep beneath and I'm the lucky one to have her in my life.

SimplyGold,

This is an absolutely beautiful poem. I read this older lady as being your mother. Curious if I may be correct?

Just Bleu, Joyce, Sweetwater, Thank you for your reply. Appreciate it much!

DawnG, This grand lady that I write of is my "adopted" mother. She represents to me the elegence, wisdom and struggle of aging.
Thank you for your response.
