PAPA
Visions strike at me forcibly
of the times that I took you for granted.
Countless memories shake my justification
for being at your bedside.
But you just lay there, eyes closed,
an imperceptible rise and fall of your chest.
Nothing to indicate acknowledgement of my presence,
save for the hope that you know I am here.

Dying comes slowly and awkwardly for Papa,
no last goodbyes or choice words of finality.
Only this wretched stillness that mocks its peaceful appearance.

What would I say to you now, Papa?
"I love you - I'll miss you - I need you?"
This is what needed to be said long before...
before this, this taunting void.

And like that selfish child I break the sacred silence,
"Papa?I'm here Papa.I'm not going anywhere."

If this stain upon the quiet deserves admonishment,
it will not be at your doing.
For the dying has ceased with your last spit of breath,
and in the frozen aftermath, I know that I've been pardoned.

Oh my dear friend, I remember this write. It touched me the first time I read it, and it has done so once again. Your love for your father is so apparent in this piece. It's truly one of your best, so filled with your heart.

Oh, and if you wish for it to be considered for the book, you'll have to go back in and click the submit button.

Just click on the edit button and you can go in and do that.

Walter, this is a very touching poem.
I feel it was written directly from
your heart. I hope it gets in the book,
so here's my vote.

Hugs,

There's such a "quiet" ambience to this poem - brings us right with you at your father's bedside witnessing his passing.

Touching.
My vote, too.
