Yesterday I happened to gaze
upon wild irises in a nearby field.
My thoughts turned instantly to you.
You, who colored life
in so many different hues,
more vivid, more explosive
than any mortal could ever do.
I knew your heart and soul
from the colors you bled true
onto the canvas of life that was your gift.

I believed you never heard my heart’s song,
yet knew somehow it sings from within
the deepest notes of you,
in harmony and discord equally
you do hold my eyes to a sacred light,
and even as I try to shield myself
from your brilliant glare,
and cover my ears to the cry of you,
my heart dares not fully absorb,
nor do my ears wish to resound
my utterances, my mortal fears.

I am a canvas stretched to the limits these days...
too taut, saturated with colors far too intense,
overlapped with brushes dipped into life and death
forever dripping onto bare stark whiteness.

And then I saw what brought me
to know you in the first place.
Utmost longing and despair,
an all-consuming fear of both life and death
that overpowered my very being.
It was the cold and the heat all wrapped into one.
That was when I knew for sure
I saw the iris of you.

THANKS NANCY!
I hadn't even kept a copy of this on my hard drive except for the first draft, and I had to re-edit it. It's basically the same as the version previously posted, possibly with different line breaks.

I'm not sure if I had the opportunity to read this before the crash. Either way I'm very glad to be reading it now as it is a very beautiful poem that I am so glad you had the first copy of to redo for all of us.

(smiles) Oh Kacy, this is beautiful, sweet friend, they say the Iris is named after Iris, the Goddess of the Rainbow, and the markings reminiscent of the rainbow are emblematic of promise, light, hope, pride and bravery. (kiss on cheek) Which reminds me of this passage:

"And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the cloud.....and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh".

The Greeks even dedicated this flower to Juno, who was honored mother of the gods, and your heart sure shines with light and color! (kiss on cheek) Yay, I love this, God Bless You, we all love you so much, you have my watercolor vote! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Kacy, you have my vote.  Vincent would be proud!  Makes me remember Don McLean's "Vincent" song, and you've painted a vivid picture here too without the music.  (Was this one of the paintings stolen that time...?)

Mark, so good to have a reply from you, you have been greatly missed!
Thanks for reading and understanding the heart of me within this write.
Actually, both the longer poems I've submitted were muse inspirations from Vincent, whose drawings and paintings mesmerized me long ago.

no, it wasn't one of the recently stolen paintings of van Gogh

I am a canvas stretched to the limits these days...

forever dripping onto bare stark whiteness.

*****************************************

This whole piece holds many vivid images and gives a path to many thought provoking lines but the above lines themselves really impacted me.  I am not sure that I totally know why just yet other than they portray many aspects of life in all of us ... at least ones that I can relate to.  Not only do I find the entire poem beautiful but the depth of imagery is remarkable and give much to your work.  I truely found this one a real treasure to read and will definitely be reading again.  Yes you have my vote on this one and prior knowledge to my return visits to it as well. I do so love how life and nature mix so well.
