Indictment in averted eyes-
forgiveness in the spark of look.

A judge awaiting jury's word--
his silence always did speak more.

A knife stuck in a block of wood--
a drawer filled with handkerchiefs.
Tin-type photos placed with care.
His secret life beneath it all.

Red ballpoints that always bled
and stained the pocket over heart.
I smiled to note the white stretch tanks
and boxer shorts in such neat fold.

"Oh Dad, you are in fashion now..."
I thought I heard him laugh.
I sneaked a bottle of cologne--
tonight I'd wear a splash.

We found a secret candy stash.
He loved milky way...
I glanced the walls and saw faces--
all of us--in disarray--
photos tacked
any which way--
and all the things we'd given him--
proudly on the shelves displayed.

Books in corners--they'd been read--
the spines were wrinkled with the bend;
and there were pages stained with tears
dog-eared with his diligence.

The smell of him is almost gone.
I held my head and wept.
Rocking like a little girl
sitting there at daddy's desk.

I touched the row of hats he kept,
on pegs above the books.
I grabbed the Whitman just for me--
before I took one final look:

Soon, this too, will all be gone.
I felt the punch of pain within
again-again
I felt the void.
And prayed that I could keep my friend.

I looked around the room once more,
and wondered of his wanderings...
I took a picture in my mind
and thought:

"This is my father."

serenity,
this is stunning, but just a quick query why have you used the masculine form of "my"?

I think my Dad would be proud.

and as to the masculine? I COULD blame it on hormones, but greatfully, should this find a home in Reflections, that can be fixed. (I understand editing is cheaper than a sex change operation too!)

and thanks again, this makes me happy to know I can share my Dad with you all.

I didn't want to cry... I don't want to cry.
But the house I cleaned out is gone now, along with the one who lived there, the tear stained books, and all the pictures I'd drawn for her...
I don't know if I want this in my library or not.. I don't want to cry again. It'll wait there until I decide.
I think I thank you, and here's my vote.
