The Storyteller “You look like quite a man”, she said; I swigged my cup of joe “So tell me fancy stories, she smiled “I’m sure there’re some you know” I put aside my crossword then. I surely liked to talk But then I took another look, and gasped without a squawk Her skin was opalescent fair with eyes of azure blue That glinted in the blazing sun and looked right into you. Her mien was tall and stately so while seated in a chair. Who was this gracious woman with the shining auburn hair? Her figure was quite handsome still, and she was yet a beauty Although she looked along in years and time had done its duty. Her dove grey suit set off her pose, with matching hat and plume No thought gave she to look about; she’d every eye in the room. “For once I loved an English earl, ambassador in Rome His hands were gentle, soft and firm, his eyes they liked to roam I knew it couldn’t last,” said she, “‘twas such a tragedy I stabbed him with my dagger that I keep behind my knee.” “And then there was the French Viscount, way down in old Algiers So sleek and debonair he was, but left me all in tears He couldn’t keep his hands on me despite my favorite lotion He strayed and played throughout the land ‘til I gave him a potion.” “Oh yes,” said she “there’s Ivan too, descended from the czars Who loved me long and often ‘neath a Russian sky of stars. His muscles were so very strong; he really had me stunned But left me for a ballerina; it was them I gunned.” “Now tell me, sir, of your exploits, Hong Kong to Zanzibar. I’ll tell you true of heads of state and where the bodies are. A true and loving woman, I am, and always make my mark I find you strong and virile” she winked, “but this is not a lark.” I can’t describe the sudden rush of tremors that I felt. But pondered, while I quietly thought, the hand that I’d been dealt. For indeed I’d wooed and often won, Glasgow to Mozambique. But could I ever trust her not to slay me while in pique? “So come with me and tell me true of places you have been, Intrigues and assignations sweet and maybe a little sin. For we can love and fill the day with pleasures quite sublime. And you will find I’m still a catch; and fairly worth your time.” The old Frost poem about the road and how he came to choose Came to my mind and vanished there for what had I to lose? I loved her long and often on that summer afternoon, But thoughts of other partners past quite nearly made me swoon, So now I tell this tale of her, this vixen that is mine. And how our life is filled with zest and how the days do shine. And too, I must confess that this great woman is my wife. For how could it be other as I’m terrified for my life!! Oh my gosh, this is wonderful, sweet friend, I love the quirky novel rhyming and the smooth flow of your voice, sweet friend, yay, better be careful though, she may be telling more than stories!
