They were gone.

Iambe looked around the room
Seeing the traces of each
in the coffee cup
The empty beer can by the dirty ashtray
Travis’ half eaten sandwich.

Still daylight
She grabbed a jacket and her keys
Went out and started the old Scout
That protested with a finger tapping click
Lasting 45 seconds as the oil pressure
Built enough to quiet lifters

“The road it’s said leads both ways”
She sang to herself as she eased  onto
The westbound lane of 132

Hours later the black tar stripped thump
Of heat buckled roads now cool
Lulled her into another tune

………………………………………………………………

Somewhere east of midnight in the pouring rain
I saw the lightning rumble and heard it speak your name again
rain slicked lines of asphalt pounding out the tune
the melody is grumbling, you know it is too soon

turning up the radio I listen to the news
drowning out all those words I never seem to choose
but still the lightning rumbles and strikes at my cold heart
leaving me to wonder why did we ever part

Later west of sunrise as the clouds begin to break
I find my scratchy voice again and music starts to wake
the dream of running fast enough that I truly can escape
the haunting shift that shadows me and seem to be my fate

Still somewhere east of midnight the rain will pour again
I will see the lightning strike and know it never ends
You will ride my memory with an ache that never stops
And I will chase an asphalt dream between stinging drops

......................................

Iambe saw Red's sign was still on
and decided a taste of Scary Smooth
might be just the thing for a wake

Sighing.....the poems at the end of these stories are, hmmmmmmmmm....

can't think of words to describe how they make me feel, but make me feel, they do. Love 'em!

Lambe is sooo deep and so wounded.

"Still somewhere east of midnight the rain will pour again
I will see the lightning strike and know it never ends
You will ride my memory with an ache that never stops
And I will chase an asphalt dream between stinging drops"

Stunning words.
