Konrad’s Hand

Like a poker game that
had gone more sour than the mash
served,
with losing hands all around,
which is not easy
in five card stud,

Konrad sat alone, the other
players having scattered like the
dust motes streaming in
the early morning rays,

and Solitaire became the game.

Flipping over the one-eyed Jack
that looked back at him like a mirrored
reflection of Jake,
squinting over his shoulder,

and when the Queen of Hearts
blared redly “off with his head” or at least,
she did, in his mind,
Iambe’s throaty laugh followed
in the hollows of his heart,

and the Joker?  He lay aside,
like Dillon had as a kid,
a grin on her face, but just a little more
stupefied, a grin of terror,
“if I smile, he won’t hit,”
the woman she had become
melting into the child
of fear,

and the Joker never did have a
place
in Solitaire.

Konrad squinted as the sun hit the
high rise mirrored windows
from across the avenue;
this was still not the city he needed to be in,
but it was the city of dead ends.

He needed to quit
the terror, but he wasn’t sure,
not yet, and he had to go look, for himself,
once more,
at the certificate.

Because if he took it
and made it an exhibit, and
held it before Iambe,
or even Jake,
but not Dillon, for she would
rabbit away into a den,
he first would have to be sure,
before Iambe scorched it with
her eyes.
