Having left the dock light on
and returning after dusk
a cloud of visitors met me there
a million tiny lake flies

I could see them from afar
hovering like a cloud
a pulsing stationary ghost
clinging to the cover of light

A million tiny lake flies
each no larger than a lash
near microscopic wings
beat a symphonic, deafen roar

I passed through the cumulous
column of sound
like a surfacing submarine
surrounded by bubbles, I held my breath

Ever closer to the surface
turning blue and swatting
needing air and now desperate
I gulped . . .

A million tiny lake flies!

Robert---I guess that all things can be looked at in more than one way.  I like your poetry!

Martie,  Thank you for the kind words!  This very scene was repeated numerous times until I made a regular habit of flipping the light off before returning after dusk to fish.  Poetry is good for any occassion and the opposite is, likewise, true.

I wonder if those are what we here around the Great Lakes
refer to as fish flies..or May flies?
Perhaps they are something else...somewhere else.
Excellent write..I read it with my mouth closed
in fear one may find it's way in.
