"'Dawlin', say, where you been at?" He smiled at her with one front tooth. "We stay out back by Vacherie-- I come 'up front' to do the stores. I left her making groceries-- the Piggly? They had sweet meat on sale for ninety-four." "OH dat is sweet," a pudgy hand rocked the basket back and forth soothing baby in the seat-- "howze-yer-mom-an-nem?" she blinked, and picked the canned goods from the floor. "Mama died. It was last spring." "Jesus, Joseph and Mary!" She smacked the hand of her baby. Then kissed it. oh-forgive-me-gawd "Yanno I'll say da rosary." her hand reached to her neck and touched the cross that hanged above enormity of breasts. Then she kissed his stubby cheek, saying, "Hey, tell Rosalie, I'll be calling for next week-- bingo just might do her good." "Give us a call, we're in the book." She answered, "Now, yanno I will..." and waddled in a big print dress wishing she were at "the Pig"... where sweet meat was just ninety four... |
