Superpower with vision short and divination of the future in bad need of a tune-up Superpower with willingness to meddle and the muscle to back it up if not the stamina Superpower heedless of past error when amnesia will facilitate the needs of the day Superpower never claiming to be perfect but always ready to stand with those in need Superpower dutifully jumping in the fray sacrificing your children to save the world God bless America and keep it children safe in the ensuing hostilities. While never a proponent of war, but a veteran none the less. I lend my support to the path this country must take, regardless of past actions. Hindsight will not change what will be, nor what was. JP Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn. |

I had a superpower once. A giant born into my family. Here's how it went for him. When he was three, a neighbor expressed condolences because of my six-year-old's mental handicap. In Kindergarten, they expected him to act like a fourth grader because of his size. On the grade school playground, other children could push or even hit him, and he would get detention if he reacted in any way. Later, on the basketball court, he'd have to make shots with opposing players literally hanging from his arms, but if he touched another player the whistle blew. Along the way, he had to consciously learn ways to make himself less threatening, because other boys would either back away or look for an excuse to be aggressive toward him, and either way he'd lose the chance for a friend. Still, he stood out in every situation, and that meant there was special scrutiny on everything he said or did. Since higher standards were required of him by people who didn't even know they were applying them, no one noticed if he did things perfectly, but the slightest flaw drew instant attention. Even now, some men (the shallow ones) are cold to him because of jealousy. And who can blame them, really? He's physically intimidating and worse yet, their wives are looking him up and down. Not an easy situation. He's gotten used to it over the years, but he has never learned to like it. All the same, it's made him a better man, being forced to learn things early that some men never learn, to meet expectations that may never be placed on others. He's become a big man, not just a large man. All that, because he's a giant. There's a parallel here. One country in the world is held to higher standards and has to meet higher expectations than any other, or be considered somehow less than other countries who don't meet those standards themselves. It has to act in totally non-threatening ways or be thought an aggressor, it has to be the most giving nation on earth or be considered stingy, and it has to withold itself from protecting its own people, or be called a war-mongering bully. And all because it's a "superpower." Shameful, isn't it? But that's made it a better country. Better than any other. [This message has been edited by Ratleader (02-07-2003 07:45 PM).] |
