I could pat your back,
     wipe your brow,
hug you fiercely;
        there's only now.

   But, I won't!

To be condescending
to you,
          would be adding
     insult to injury
to your beautiful intellect.

I'll hurt your feelings, first,
before I ever rape your mind,
and pray, within that pain,
   it's wisdom that you'll find.

If you don't choose to
play pretty,

     that is your choice.

If I don't choose to
play nice,

     that is mine.

Is there a difference?

Leaving it up to the other,
As you must, is often difficult to do.
This is an easy read.

Professor,

Thanks for your time of reading and responding. I appreciate your comments and what I basically mean with this piece is unconditional love does not mean condoning ill behavior, no matter the reason, and particularly when dealing with an extraordinarily bright person. It is condenscending and disrespectful for me to pretend they are less than, even if they are looking for an easy way out....I might as well slap them in the face as to hug them....they will wake up, one day, and know who did care enough not treat them with the indifference of shining them on, hopefully remembering what was said...

Thank you, Pat

Pat,
I like your wit in this one.
Too often people will stay quiet about the negative behaviour of the ones they love. And I've seen it just lead to progression and more pain on both parts.
the whole "tough love" stand can seem hard, but its so much easier. It leads to change and reality. I remmeber conversations with my sister and I her sayings "I'm sorry"
me, "yea, are you?"
her, "uhm..."
it really leads for some thought.
As always liked this alot.

Always, Alyssa

(big hugggssssssss) Condescending was the word that also came to my mind reading this, sweet friend, I guess the un in unconditional is always mistaken and misunderstood and that is what gets so many in mischief and heartbreak! (sad sigh) This is so well-expressed, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Patricia, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Alyssa, Noah and Lori,

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate you for taking the time to read and reply.

Carol,

Yes, and some even would follow their leader right over a cliff.

I'm simply not that kind of person.

Some also, in the name of Christ, put up with a lot and say nothing....

I am not that kind of Christian...And, I don't know a Jesus like that....my Jesus is a Warrior, and He did speak ~when the time was right~

"People put up with a lot, thinking things will change."  Yes, they do, but I am not one of them.....

Co-dependancy is an interesting subject in and of itself... I can only change myself...true statement...but, I do not have to accept ill behavior...sometimes it is best to walk away as people and situations are complex....there is a point in time when I've done and said all I know, and then I give it to God to handle.

Thanks for you comment, many agree with you.  Hugs, Pat

Pat,
this is another poem with much truth and wisdom.
Sometimes, when they won't listen, we just
have to let them go and learn from their own
mistakes. No matter who the person is..

I enjoyed reading your poem, friend....
