the ass-end of space

Dock the boat and walk
into the citadel through two
golden arches where signs assure you
that billions have been served
Despite the fact the streets
you walk on are littered with
the hungry who obviously haven't been
Search for spirit and you'll find
the pious in shining temples of
steel and glass that reach defiantly
into the heavens themselves
In God they may trust but
it's green that they worship
Discover art and culture instead
Moving pictures on small and silver screens
mindless fairy tales for grownups
needing escape from realities they've made
Or look instead upon the galleries
and murals that swallow every open space
Blissful cancer 'victims' in Newport
human decay and living skeletons in Calvin Kleins
and gleaming cars imported from
once sworn enemies
Spending billions to defend us
from newly created ones
though we're more likely die
from lack of health plan then by sword of war
Spend billions on advertising for products
though millions are without work, without means
or without homes to display them in
So you walk back to the boat instead
but setting out its best
to throw the oars to sea and fate
For anywhere you land will have
been devoured by the spread of this disease
the disease of Empire

Despite the term Americana this is not an indictment of the U.S, as a Canadian we share the same defects, and sadly the defects North America are spreading. I'm NOT left-wing or AT ALL political this is just a rant because I'm more than a little jaded and sick of what we deem 'culture'

fact... beeing a fee market society will indeed creat unequal situations..

opinon... I'd rather be free market society than any other kind I have read about or experienced..

Second opinon... culture is not the same in some ways as economic practices.

third opinon...
the poem is nicely done..and while I could debate a few points in the message..still enjoyed..

actually culture just is what is--like a climate...has no positive or negative connotations in anthropological terms.

But...I love this. You know I do. Especially this--"though we're more likely die
from lack of health plan then by sword of war"

Yes. Especially that.

Hugs.

Cpat the funny thing is the things you would argue for I would probably agree with. I know the benifit and beauty of living in our way of life, I've obviously taken the ugliest side of things which one tends to do with a rant. This was not political activism just a rant of things I find disturbing, in this state of mind. Thanks for the response and feel free to say more.

Thank you Eagle and here are more
"You might not see things yet on the surface, but underground it's already on fire."

K  there is culture and then there is mass culture so I agree and disagree. how's that for cryptic dualism?

I enjoy this entire poem and agree with the feelings of it.....a good rant. Thank you for it....makes me feel good.

"gleaming cars imported from once sworn enemies" really has been one of my annoyances...for a long time!

But, free enterprise is everything!!!

It is a sickening world we live in and all we can do is keep our side of the street clean....and help those we can, who usually don't really want help, but were taught from generations past, the government will pay them to have baby, after baby after baby... what a can of worms in my mind, you opened... enough!

You've a good heart.   Hugs, Pat

..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons..
