7 Astronauts Die As Shuttle Breaks Apart

By MARCIA DUNN and PAM EASTON,
Associated Press Writers [2/1/03]

high over texas and just short of home, space
shuttle columbia fell to pieces saturday, raining
debris over hundreds of miles of countryside.
Seven astronauts perished a gut-wrenching loss
for a country and world already staggered by
tragedy.

--

here's to you,

--

       about venus
[columbia, fly]
       -------------------------------------

you were suppose to tell me about venus--today,
over sprite and number 5 combos
inside that wafflehouse we agreed on before you left.

i spent all nite on the couch--missing you
       in photographs, and
       around 6:22am--when stars faded
       and sunshine suffocated streetlamps ..

       .. i smiled.

       because you'd be here soon
to render this crossnecklace faith of mine ..
and make these salty eyes just, worth the while.

i spent all morning on the porch--drinking your coffee
while listening to the static of fm radio, and
around 8:00am--when angels fell from beryl skies,
       my world crumbled ..

       .. and i cried,

because .. you were suppose to come home and tell me about venus--today ..

--------------------------------------------
"and i dont want the world to see me
because i don't think that theyd
understand,
when everythings meant to be broken
i just want you to know who i am"

[goo goo dolls]
--------------------------------------------

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Christian, this is so very sad but compassionate, sweet friend, my thoughts are with all their families right now as I wonder if they will always see their loved ones faces in Andromeda! (sad sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Christian, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

oh wow! this is amazing!i liked how you took on a different role and tried to play the victim in the poem. It really puts you in the shoes and it makes you feel something. i enjoyed this a lot! thanks for the tribute!

I live in Texas, around the Galveston area. We didn't get any debris down here but it was still really scary for something like that to happen so close to home . God bless.

red, galveston? that's pretty far down there. i
live up here in dallas/fort worth. you could hear
the sonic boom from my front porch, and yeah
it was pretty scary. too scary.

i'm sorry if i made you cry, or made you think
more that you had to. as someone who's just a dot
in this world--i just, needed to write it.

Written in your unique, refreshing style.  Experiencing this in the first person seemed sincere and affective.  Nicely done Christian.

Hi Christian,
though it may be inappropriate to say that i enjoyed the poem for this is a tribute to a tragedy, i did enjoy and nodded at your creative expressions "sunshine suffocated streetlamps" and "crossnecklace faith of mine"

Christian -

First off, I loved this tribute... I can imagine this going through the minds of one of the children who lost a parent... very touching.

Second, I was going to ask you if you were from Dallas - because of one of the lines in your poems about Mayfield and Collins...but I chickened out...didn't want to sound stupid if there was a Mayfield & Collins in some other State... haha
I'm from Dallas, too...small little world of poet friends..

Enjoyed your work

One of the marks of brilliant writing is not the subject matter but from which direction the subject matter is approached and described. You have chosen a path few others, with the exception of Ray Bradbury, would have considered. My highest appreciation to you, sir...
