(Believe it or not, this poem I wrote was inspired by the severe drought here in Colorado! LOL! It sure is a desert out here, yet the desert is a mysteriously beautiful place and this reminds me of the Arabic culture, which I love very much! Enjoy! )

Desert Comber
(Co-Titled "Ai-Hawa" (Arabic for "the wind")
By: Noah Eaton
2/1/03

Ai-Hawa is walking through the desert
Born on a late Thursday night under the east star
Making a sojourn to celebrate her seventeenth birthday
Wearing the perfume of the white lotus with sage
Shielding her face with the shambah her grandmother handed to her

You can still see the henna glistening on her pretty cheeks
Upon her eyelashes you can read ancient proverbs etched upon her kohl
Gabani highlights her whole anatomy near and far
She holds her mystique up with her zunnar
Beleaguered by the destiny that you know she beseeches...

She's the desert comber
She is lifes dearest rakkasah
She's the desert comber
With breath of anise, just dancing her raksah

Ai-Hawa knows you can't govern the terrestial
But the terrestial can govern you
She is the snake-charmer, the burning-coal walker
She pays her dues, fills her obligations with extreme measures
Aspiring to ascend, her honesty coming with no cavil

She fasts with her family during Ramadan
Her stomach empty of food but inundated with grace
Performing her good deeds through Lailat ul-Qadr
She cries with joy every time she speaks a prayer
Swearing she is swaying at once with a thousand days

She's the desert comber
She is lifes dearest rakkasah
She's the desert comber
With breath of anise, just dancing her raksah

Her unwritten law is the tune of the shabbabah
Her unspoken word is in the song of the naker
Her living proof is in the sip of an herbal tea
Blessed she be, be blessed she may
Blessed be her melody maker...

Ai-Hawa is walking through the desert
Combing the sands with her grandmother's wrinkles of wisdom
Which she is always wearing proudly on her face
Guiding Ai-Hawa like the black-tailed dormouse
Soaring like the falcon...

She's the desert comber
She is lifes dearest rakkasah
She's the desert comber
With breath of anise, just dancing her raksah
She's the desert comber
She's the Arabian wind
She's the desert comber
She is lifes treasured daughter
She is lifes treasured daughter
Don't you know,
She is lifes treasured daughter...

Noah,
this is fantastic, I was totally captivated by the images you presented. I could hear the wind in the dancing and feel the sun in the fasting and the joy. How did you get the foreign language though?

Noah, this is so good. I love the way you're putting your poetry on the colored background, too. It really does add to your poems....

This is lovely, Noah! I'm a huge fan of the desert, but also hope you get some rain soon.
