Come January
Bell’s Ford freezes
Making the crossing
A gamble of cracking drop of doused
Or sliding slam into the short stone cut

It’s not used much any more
And even less in the winter
So if you get in trouble
You’d better be planning on
getting yourself out.

I don’t normally go through that way
But caught myself on the wrong side of Clancy
When the storm hit and that Semi closed Route 48
by jackknifing, sending several tons of corn
Skidding in piles from ditch to ditch.

I cut across on F picked up Sherman Road
Then over to Bell’s.
Easy enough in summer time and not bad come winter
Except in January when the ford freezes.

I saw her on top of the truck before I got to the water.
She was sitting huddled best she could against the wind
Not wanting to brave the water and ice.
Waiting I guess, but not much likely to come along
though she probably would have frozen one way or the other
If  that Semi hadn’t planted half of Iowa on the highway.

I eased up to the edge of the water and saw the ice
Had refused to hold her and the old Chevy she drove
So the Truck now sat nose down in 5 ft or so of water
Blocking anyone else crossing and guarantying her a bath
A very cold bath

I stopped, chatted with her a bit, and asked if she was ready to get wet.
She cursed me a bit, but didn’t see any options herself
So we agreed with some degree of certainty
That it was not funny

I suggested she strip off her clothes, hold them over her head
And walk to the truck where she could redress in the heat
And at least her clothes would be dry and she might not
Turn out looking as blue as Babe after a Michigan winter.

I have to tell you
She was a looker
And while I hated to see her shiver
It was the highlight of my trip
Seeing her walk across to the truck wearing only her shoes

I never did tell her I could have backed out to her
Let her step into the bed of my truck
And driven her back

She never did tell me
Her name

..as blue as Paul Bunyan's blue ox Babe...
You didn't even tell her you could back it out?
You didn't even know her name!
*I have shivers....the good kind.*
Love this...more please?

At least this way, you got more than a "thank you"!!   And she learned to read the ice better...does the truck have a good heater??

believe in what your heart feels...

You never told her you could have backed out, what a guy!!

Too bad you didn't get her name but it serves you right, I'll bet it was worth the lookee though.

Time will tell if she will come to your rescue when you start to sink!!!

Clever write Capt!!

I'll admit the title drew me in... Bell Branch runs along my Dad's property and a certain sailor is fond of calling me Belle... so how could I not peek? *S*

But what a treat you had waiting for me! *S* The story is so delightful I'd be copying your entire poem if I tried to repeat all my favorite lines. *S*

ROFLMAO @ Toe made you do it... but those eyelashes you're batting so innocently don't quite conceal the devil dancing in your eyes. LOL

I love this!!!
