Must have been late March
When I packed the old truck
And decided to go see
What was up north.

I’d met an old man
Who came from Idaho
Over at the cantina on night
And he told me about
The mountains there
And how the road followed the Snake

He told me about many things
But mostly about
An auburn haired girl
He had known
And how she had cooked for him
A few years when he was working
A cattle spread up in the panhandle.

Told me he got a letter from her once
Telling him he had a daughter now
And that she looked just like she had
In younger years.

He handed me a package
And told me if I was ever up that way
Go drop by…and give her this.

Well, anyway, I packed and headed north
Must have been late March
Cause the snow hadn’t melted off yet
And in April I remember those mountain flowers
I saw up there

I found her
His daughter
And she had the prettiest auburn hair
Soft brown eyes and a smile
That would melt even an old cynic like me

I gave her the package
And was about to leave, when she stopped me
Stood up on tiptoe and planted a kiss
On my scruffy old cheek

Dang If I didn’t wish I was
15 years younger
‘cause that kiss sure made me
understand why the old man
remembered.

Ron--Seems you have been many places....how about California?  I'm really curious about what was in the package...do you know?  I really enjoy your story poems (but you know that).

too...

I was thinking maybe baked bread was in the package.
..as long as you're headed north...
how 'bout crossing the border?
Excellent write... I know Sea isn't the only one applauding!

Cpat Hair,

I enjoy your poetry. You are a wonderful story teller, I suspect you have been told this by many. Looking forward to your next.
