The dead are buried above ground
Because coffins push up to the surface
In any grave dug there.
Souls do not rest
As easy in sunlight
As they do 6 feet under.

No one really dies in New Orleans,
She wakes all eventually
And leads them to the crowds
Of Bourbon or Magazine
Where they mingle and touch
Where they sing of the river
Where they dance without blood

Come dawn
Her pale face changes
As she puts wisps of fog
Back in place
Leaving crooked grin
Of monuments
To the sinners

and sunlight burns dead eyes
in gardens
Of crypts
where they all wait
to hear her beckon
late shadows

Capt. Ron, this one does have an eerie feeling........but written with excellence, as is usual with your poetry....

The last three lines of the first stanza, I think I shall frame!
Love them!

Also enjoyed the rest of the poem.
Insightful of much....

Thanks, Pat

Captain, I was in one of those graveyards (just visiting!) in New Orleans as a hurricane was brewing. The skies grew dark and the winds began howling--or were they the tortured screams of the dead?*?
Your chilling poem vividly brought back haunting memories!

You certainly can create an atmosphere!

Hugs

Ron--I've always enjoyed wandering around cemeteries, reading names and dates, feeling something spirit born.  I've felt it in a positive way, but this poem and your experience, chilled me.  You have a talent for creating such real atmosphere.  Well done!

I knew when I read the first line this had to be about New Orleans.  Enjoyed this very much.

This is the cemetary I was telling you about. I still go there from time to time. It's beautiful. Especially in spring, when the iris are in full bloom. It is quite a romantic spot for a picnic...but? heh..these things must be timed...grinning, there IS a tour boat that passes every other hour.

(mmmhmm. Somewhere? Somebody brought home some interesting photos...)sheesh.

hugs you.
