What sin, what crime
of heart is this
that I pay the bill complete?
Surely there is karmic debt--
remittance stamped in "payment due"--
and just a smile
would bellow blast
of wind to spark an ember's flame--
but oh to think now that he laughed
as I sobbed a moment weak.

Something in the way he stood--
veil of stone kept covered eyes...
How could he stand so towering
and laugh at me there on the floor?

"Just get up and walk" he said.
Like Jesus as the sage.
Forgetting that it was his whip
that turned my hairs to gray...

I wept. I wept.
don't look at me
I despise this moment's give.
"One of us must die," I said.
"Of now, I don't care which."

"What is it that you might need NOW?"
He jangled keys impatiently.
He couldn't wait for open gate--
I sank my heart--
no love for me...
I battled armegeddon's fate.

Cold. So cold.
There in his eyes
as he laughed again.

"What is it that you want from me?"
produced my only grin.
and then I just averted eyes,
knowing total of the cost.

I played a game
and tossed the dice...

I gambled,
and I lost.

"The odds are always stacked", I thought,
"in favor of the house."
A shrug of just another day.
I laugh at dreams of crown.

It is true, that you can win
if you play instinctively.
"Stop the game while you're ahead."
Know when it's time to leave.

So I call for the pit boss.
"Please come rate my play.
I've lost a bit of silver here."
Complacently he dug my grave.

I will take
the compensate
and leave--washing the dust from feet.

Cash the chips
and count the loss,
and pray there's something left for me.

you know..some poems bleed... and this one does..like an artery cut..with the reader watching the pulse of heart push its own demise.

Wow, the entire piece held my gaze as I passed over each word, every syllable.  This piece is very well written, it held me close and did not let go till it was over.  Sounds like it carries a story with it.

Beneath, there is more beneath, but, what is there in the end?  More beneath?  Or something more?

I second the wow, this is SO well written!

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

(sigh) I believe in gambles, I just don't believe in the kind they make out of plastic and 2 by 4 inch cards! (big hugggssssss) Never accept the triviality of a game and bet on the real essence of life as taking risks in life itself is a promising adventure, this is marvelous, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karen, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
