Babylon boasted but one tower;
here hundreds reach through haze
towards an attainable heaven.

But who needs God where Mammon
lays every hill and mountain low,
makes every rough place plain?

Yet even here temples squat
cowering between skyscrapers.
Incense sweetens the traffic fumes.

II

Rolling on the floor like a drunk,
a legless man rattles his tin.

Commuters flow round him, over him,
as a tide round a rock - relentlessly.

III

Over land and sea
haze, hiding distant mountains,
shrouds a bleak future.

Men, busy as ants,
eyes fixed on the task at hand,
ignore horizons.

IV

The bronze Buddha on the mountain sits
massively. His sightless eyes are fixed
on a far horizon. If the mist should clear
his view would be of calm waters where
ships ride at anchor and at rest.

Believers and non-believers, pilgrims, stream,
like termites towards honey, upwards, swarm
briefly and unnoticed round his feet,
then stream down again. What sweet
plunder do they carry to the nest?

Beyond the ships, what is it that he sees?
What prospect holds that level gaze?
Could he discern them through the haze?
The slim towers of the city rise
and, aspiring to a rival heaven, are blessed.

It's amazing I won. I was running against peace, prosperity, & incumbency.

A glimpse. Enjoyed and felt I was viewing it through your eyes. References to the ants and termites reminds me of dense population, but a determination to work and be productive. Interesting.

Thank you, Pat

(big huggssssssss) This is beautiful, sweet friend, this made me cry to see the towers stretch to the heavens and like an obelisk reflect the light of the golden sun! (sigh) This is wonderful, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Winston, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

GOIDsparkIESS - title is so because that's where I went on vacation in 1996.
Connel - you sound surprised by something. What is it?
inkedgoddess - my dear Brooklyn beauty, don't forget am only human, so, maybe, one of these days you might (just might ) find a typo in my post as well as my reply.

Thanks.

Very descriptive and thought provoking.  Meditative, as the Buddha is.  And like the Buddha, much ignored.  That is, the Buddha as meditation and introspection.  Enjoyed this.

like this..the structure and the thought process lend a feel to it that adds to the scenes painted with your words..

good stuff...and I make typos all the time.
