Sequela

They didn’t expect suffering to linger,
to hang about in the uneasy dark,
becoming their own shadows
in years that passed.

They discuss this in whispers - on the phone
or in person, careful to keep the dregs of it
from the other siblings and their families.

Progress is measured in small rungs,
dirty days marked by private scars,
punctuated by the occasional clean one,
when light cracks through heavy, purple drapes.

Nighttime echoes inner, gray tones,
apparitions box shadows on walls -
replaying childhood nightmares,
a movie in black and blue.

It doesn’t matter if eyes are open
or shut tightly against the image of him;
the uncle, who thieved innocence,
lives on in predatory time.

Very sad, Corinne. Although forgiven, it is something that can never really be forgotten. Excellent expression.

Corinne,
This is a thing that elicits in me, a formless black anger.

That, one could (would) break the trust and steal the innocence of those that most need protecting,
is,
in my thinking.....inhuman.

You've painted this well.

Thank you Denise. How true.

Thanks Sey.

Hi MidnightSun - with a name like midnightsun - I do believe you've seen the extreme in dark and light. And I'm sorry for that.

Thank you, Martie.

Thank you, Noah. So sorry to hear of your pain. You are a genuine heart
and I know you'll be just fine.

Ed, how indeed? Yes, unformed anger is a good description. This friend has been in therapy half her life and still can't fight her way all the way out. I fear she and her brother never will.
