he pleads with me
to let him drive in the passing lane,
i tell him my heart can't take that yet,
all of a sudden even I feel older,
my hands clenched , feet pressed
against the passenger floor,
i put on reggae, and he shows his disdain,
we settle on something we both like,
some Dark Side,
again,
going down like fine wine,
we share poetry and music
dylan to metallica,
he calls me "dude",
he thinks im coolmom,
but helplessly stuck in the timewarp
of my generation,
and a wannabe of his,
we play "overrated or underrated"
aerosmith, eminem, U2, etc.
he tells me audio slave is
hopelessly mediocre,
i let his mouth momentarily echo the toilet one of mine,
as a 99 year old hangs a left, no signal,
he wont hug me anymore, tho,
has days when  he just grunts,
in response, over dinner conversation,
l6 candles, towers over me now, no more hugs, tho
we talk through the sunday drive,
about life, music, girls, etc.
he tells me he feels like his whole life is contingent
on the 3 hour SAT he takes for the first time next week,
"watch out for bambi on the road", i yell
he tells me his friend is out of school
for 2 weeks now, with mono
i get real sad, tell him one of our teenage patients,
was thought to have the kissing disease too,
we got the hospital report back,
diagnosis, leukemia,
every mothers fear,
i choke back the tears as he's driving along,
he reaches over and embraces me,
asks me if im okay,
offers me a cookie,
then puts my bob marley cd back on.
we drive along,
me
and my beautiful baby boy
that gifted me
with his love
today

It doesn't get much better than this....
Moments with our children become shorter
as each year passes....We and they go in
stages.....

Ya gotta like this poem.  It is super.

inkedgoddess~Enjoyed very much.
A special moment shared by mother and son. This reminded me of moments shared with my daughter as she was learning to drive and maturing from girl to young lady
Thanks for sharing...Paul

M Love this side, you are tender and loving and without a doubt one of the world's greatest mom's.  While it may not be as open as it once was his love is always there as is his knowledge of music because I agree Audioslave was a huge f***cking dissapointment.

inkedgoddess, I loved this. It was as if I was riding in the back seat watching you and your "baby". This is so sweet and loving.

BTW, I'm glad that he reached over and hugged you.
Thank you for sharing this piece of your heart with us. I really enjoyed seeing this side of you, too....

thanks for the awareness of the softer side, of course it is always there, tho, even in
other poetry, it lurks or whispers if you can read in, whether in anger or anxst, it stems from love, or love gone astray

ethel, i am glad he reached over too, sometimes he can be very reserved and unable to show his feelings, even tho i know they are there for me, cause i am a coolmom, but
ive told him i wish he could show them, and
that morning driving, along, spontaneously he did and it just really touched me deeply
thanks,,michele

You've pretty much summed it up... and ya know what?  It doesn't change - Only the issues do... True fact... Nicely said, inked...

Good morning inkedgoddess,

Had to check in this morning and found your poem. I will admit that it brought tears to my eyes. Why? Because what lovely innocense and tenderness you share. Having no children of my own I appreicate your sharing this wonderful connection you have with your son. This  poem is well written and very, very much enjoyed. I look forward to reading more of your work.

thank you simply,
it is a beutiful connection that we share, he even lets me baby him, with things like
hot chocolate and homemade cookies on a snowy day, i'd like to lock him in as a 8 year old , but except for glimpses of those days, here and there, i know i can't and have to let him grow up

Michele,

This is so precious. I adore it....
When he is all grown up and comes to visit, you WILL get those hugs, I am positive....you are such a great mom I can't  wait til you have a grandchild!

I know, I know, I know.....

someday, after college...and a trip to Europe, etc...

~someday~, I hope you will know that pleasure, too..

Hugs, Pat

Oh, how sweet! It reminds me of my nephew who is also 16 and driving - and it so big now. He used to be so little but kept growing, and growing, and growing into this big football player. It amazes me. Glad you had the special moment with your son. Those are the moments that make life worth living. Enjoy.

It kinda sucks that our kids have to grow up. I have experienced everything you wrote about with both of my kids. Every gray hair is well earned. As always you keep my attention!
