If I'd known how you'd run away
I would have memorized the day
we slogged through sandy catclaw fields,
and chased each other 'til we reeled
and fell down in the old barn's hay.

The worst thing is, you might have stayed
if I had found the nerve to say
how much I cared-the way I feel-
if I'd known how.

I should have known you wouldn't play;
I tried to mold you-you're not clay.
My chance is shot-the truth revealed-
it's much too late-the time's congealed.
I wouldn't have these tears to pay
if I'd known how.
