He gave me thirty dollars,
And a fourteen year old truck.
And said, "You're like your father-
Son, I surely wish you luck.

Be sure and write your momma-
She hates to see you go.
But I guess that we have always known,
You'd follow rodeo."

That was fifteen years ago,
I said good-bye to Dad.
He and Mama were the finest-
Friends I ever had.

Mama died in eighty-eight-
And Dad a year ago,
And all that I have left to love,
Is that old rodeo.

I guess that it's addictive-
I have to ride to thrive.
Motels rooms, and burger deals-
A thousand all-night drives.

A lot of buckle-polishers,
But I learned long ago-
That matrimony can't compete,
With that old rodeo.

I love these lifestyle stories by you John! Makes me wish to sample a bit of that.

John, sounds like you really love the rodeo. That's good to love what you do....

This is a country song waiting for the right melody.  I enjoyed it very much.  KJ

I love reading your poetry, it has it's own music. It makes me think of my childhood, and jumping off the fence when the brahma bulls tried to scrape their riders off on it.
