Is irretrievable time, past affairs
merely the detritus of existence?

Each winnowed hour, each whittled love
the oxidized verdigris on our perfect lives,

All doubt, regret like acid rain on marble
pocking the smooth innocence in slow subtle wear.

At what point do past loves pose for the artist,
what moment cast to memory then buried?

Is it the grandeur of new passion at it's height
or like the fall at Eden, downcast dejection?

What will love's archaeologists unbury
when their imploring spade uncovers us?

Will there be gasps as when the farmer
whose concern over the tardy cattle

led to the darkened field and the bellow
of the bloodied ox, it's swan song

the last sound the wolf heard, gored
and pinned against the stalwart oak,

or the eagles found in death's grip,
one ancient, one challenger, locked talons,

all the sky not room enough, fall from
flight, regal to tightly held ruin?

These our failed and broken marriages.
Or last summer's affairs, the only evidence

one sole and starved per grave,
the other disappeared in deafness.

But what of us, our untranslatable tones?
You have always seen me, I have always heard you.

Will we draw sighs in love's surrender?
Are you crying? Do you know I love you?

Beutifully expressed. I would hope this would bring a blessing of results to the recipient..

You've managed to put a feeling to moment,
that empty vast hole
of failure.

Well done.

I had to read it three times,
before I could find those words.

Well, Richard, I've read it over and over again, and still
can't seem to find the right words (unlike Karilea).
But, I do truly hope that the one this is written about will
answer your question in the way your heart desires. There is
such longing in this, dear friend.....and so many unanswered
questions. I hope, too, that the answers to those
questions will come to you.

I've come back to read this piece several times, Richard - I really am enjoying your imagery - and I'm getting something new from it with each reading - That's a successful poetic work in my eyes...
