Self Esteem

Liking one's self is a good thing
And not as vain as it might seem,
If we don't demean another
To amplify our self esteem.

Since I was raised by loving folks
Who taught me to have self respect
And praised me for good qualities,
My fragile ego was not wrecked.

If I didn't like me, I would
Tell me to change or take a hike.
I refuse to live a lifetime
With someone I do not like.

Joyce,

This is really beautiful for those who are from a well-adjusted childhood.

Sadly, some with low self-esteem got that way because of the way they were treated in childhood and too often it takes a lifetime and great pain, confusion and suffering just to figure it all out.

I am happy for you and you are right about never settling for anything less than all we are meant to be....or can be.....one good way to raise self-esteem is by getting out of self and doing something for another....
but, it is an on-going battle, and too often drugs and alcohol and sex and gambling play a large part of stuffing/numbing feelings of rejection and shame...all things are possible with God however....

Sorry, didn't mean to go on, but this is a good topic....just two sides of the issue....glad you posted here, and would like to see more of your work...

Hugs and warm regards, Pat

Dear Regards.  I didn't mean to sound smug.  I was answering a challenge asking if I liked myself.  I know that I was blessed with understanding and loving parents But I don't think even those with troubles should dislike themselves.  Their problems are not them.  I will be writing more.  Thank you,  Joyce

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Joyce, we all know you're not being smug, sweet friend, I believe everyone should love him/herself and feeling that way is not being egotistical, only loving yourself for the wealth and talent you have is egotistical, which is two completely different things! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Joyce, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Joyce, I like this poem. I'm glad that you posted here, too. I've seen your poetry
in the other forum and I liked it. I hope you'll post more of it here.
Btw, a friend of mine who I haven't seen for a while had the same name as you....Joyce Johnson. I wonder if you are the same person. Do you sing and play the guitar? You can e-mail me to tell me if you want to.

Joyce,

Evidently you took my comments as personal critisism. I don't see where I said you were smug. Nor, do I see where you said this challenge was:"If you liked yourself".

Joyce ~

I appologize for not replying sooner, but I have been on sort of a sabbatical for the past few weeks.

This was delightful! Full of wit and wisdom! Your poem put a great big smile on my face!
I enjoy all of your poetry and this was extra special for me since you wrote this in response to my challenge! Thank you!

Blessings to you!
Linda
