“T’is January
Afterall,” said he to she.
“But still it’s too cold”
she emphatically told.
“My old coat is warm enough”
“But the wind is rough”

“I will return soon”
With gloved hands he left the room,
Letting the cold in
Walked and leaned into the wind
Quickly rounding the walk’s bend.

Eyes water in wind
Cheeks get paler still
Cold creeps slowly in
Numbing all he’d feel
Slow steps on the ice
Steadies with his cane
Still almost slips twice
The numb ending pain.
Moving by just will
Comes back where he’d been.

The door yields to turn
Opening to the bright room,
In hearth fire burn
Returns the warmth to him soon.
“Why do you go there
just to breath that cold fresh air”

Quiet he takes seat
In the chair by the fire,
Calmly he warms his feet
And gently stokes it higher.
The numb leaves him soon
Allowing pain to return.

Gloom

Gloom,
Very clever but it's still the same question
WHY. Enjoyed the read.

sometimes it gets too bad, and numb is good...I first thought of going out into the cold just to come back inside where it's warm and I could be glad for the opportunity to live in the house, even though it's really not all that warm, there's no one else in it, and I hate the walls. But I can see the side you are on...I know numbness well.

Wonderful read.  Personally I enjoy the cold.

Beneath, there is more beneath, but, what is there in the end?  More beneath?  Or something more?

You walk the wind
others walk a line...
and for some
the pain is only masqued...

Bravo, Professor...

a read worth keeping...

Love this. Great slice of life. I know why he'd do it....

I have and amazingly, was drawn back to warm.

Enjoyed, Pat

I've been there, when I merely through the motions and even though numb wasn't fun, at the time it was better than pain.........clever Gloom~! I enjoyed the stroll.
