By The Coleraine Road

Silent and strong, gnarled and noble,

These sentinels of another time

Stand in scattered formation,

With the suffering of immobilised vigilance;

They are guardians of a world forgone,

In a land foreigned beyond their hope

And a time unaware of their place.

From the majestic to the grotesque

They have been transformed without recourse

'Cept with their memories of past glory kindled by each dawn,

Bathed in dreaming' source, renewing a purpose lost.

Yet in cheating times the forlorn shrouds of loss, loneliness

And thinning enwrap, veil and chill,

(from which in denied, distended yearning for other they reach)

Adding only damp to dying embers.

Scattered they litter the battlefields,

Scarred they seek the comfort of mission,

But sacred they have ceased to feel.

We are tied, these and I,

In a way beyond the knowing;

For at my birth they stood in their fields of pain,

These my gargantuan friends and my grotesque fears,

And all I have seen and recognised on my roads to here and there.

Everpresent and never leaving they reach and touch from there to here.

I will return, and to numbers less,

To that space of birth, of soul and point,

Into the dreams of peace and place,

To dreaming's friends and journey's end

And be content for the Love I've known.

Outstanding. Gigantic sequoias loomed before me, the majestic beauties I've loved since the first glance.
