Reading the license plate ahead as miles behind
turn scrub oak and mesquite to a blur.

Barbed wire captures the tumbleweed and
dune of sand,  though slight as the bump of
a hot asphalt ribbon running endlessly into the
horizon wakes sleeping minds as a golden ball
shrinks into the dusk ahead.

Each lurching precarious sway remembered
as breath was held till blue. Till the next bump
that took the heaviness out of the seat beneath me.

Smelling…
The richness of  Joe laced with a swirl of milk and
Two spoons in clink of the ear. A once white cup,  stained
from a thousand sips and ahhhhs…Juan and his donkey
would be proud.

Hazel against the clear of curved glass,  counting fence
posts,  telephone poles,  watching the ever  penetrating
pump jack bringing mother crude to feed the wheels
rolling endless black ribbons into a sunset describable
only as “awesome”.

Swirling brunette and blues,  there beside me as I  ride
shotgun on this caravan called moving…Full lips,
high cheeks,  with a touch of freckles around a
nose that could smell my thoughts of ever telling a lie.
Where was the hatchet when I needed one for my
cherry tree.

A dozen or so moves from town to town,  where dreams
were born from the dust of a Texas day.
Where boys grew and lived  friend to friend,
as goodbyes and tears became
just a part of what was…

Following that black ribbon,  as stripes fell into the
darkness behind….following a home on wheels,
as a pump jack bowed in reverence to black gold
and blue eyes smiled at me,  a mother’s smile…

Hazel rested,  knowing all would be well
over the next rise of ribbon,  the next small town
in a journey of dreams..

From the age of 8 till 13,  I lived in approximately a dozen Texas towns,  following my
father's work....We lived in a mobile home,  small by today's standards...This is my
feel of that trek taken between each new part of a child's reality...   Enjoy...

I absolutely loved this, the feel of it, brought to mind Kerouac. Black ribbons, that's brilliant. I don't know what else to say I'm going to go back and reread it a few times I love it and am totally in awe of your abilties sir.

To pain and strife
Let all that dances through me

Goodness, Barry, I felt like I was right there in the car with you.

My Dad was an electrician and until I was in the seventh grade, we used to go out of town with him a lot to work on big construction jobs. We did this even during school time until my little brother started to school. Then, we only went during summer months.
I loved going to different towns and schools and making different friends....and the traveling, too. I used to lie down in the seat and count telephone and electrical poles and road signs until I went to sleep.
Well, I could go on and on about all those times and different friends and experiences.........

Thanx Ethel,  and I am sure we would listen.
Yes,  variety is the spice of life, and I
certainly was given that...though there
were moments I wished I had not endured...
But it was all part of growing up...

You know, I love the stories that you write about the richness of your life.  Spiced with wonder, and reality,,,and black ribbons.

You brought to me a wonderful thought of my mother, whose father traveled from town to town, being in the government's employ...13 schools before she graduated...

thank you.

And free verse...

could I be happier?

Brilliant! Totally brilliant!!

My perspective of me is different,
As I look out from within,
Than that of others on the outside,
Trying to look in.     ©spirit
