Have roundtables changed their shape
students used to excell in debates;
once created for all to be equidistant
that all should have an equal voice,
Arthur's roundtable has since evolved...
am unsure about its state of health or shape
as some elements vent frustrations
violently, with careless introspection
fewer reflections of obvious consequences
then questions as to why, are asked later!

Take the protective boyfriend who felt gilted
and preferred to put dialectics into disuse
shunned by classmates perhaps?
institutional discords were slated away
swept under academic rugs
for the name of the institution
for the sake of civility
shortsighted ambiguity
students used to vent their grievances
at debates...so what about parlay,
have roundtables become square?
word solutions are no longer there?

I think maybe people don't publically debate so much any more for fear of being politically incorrect.  That's assuming I'm not totally off base here.  Or I think you said that.  Or maybe there's a bigger picture I'm not seeing.  Anyway, it got me thinking.

I do so enjoy being called every year to attend the debates held at the colleges and high schools.  Mirror Man may have a point, however; everyone seems to have an opinion nowadays and everyone's opinion is the only one to listen to, in their opinion.

And then there's that "politically correct" stuff that, like feminism, went a tad too far.  [Ducking spitballs, now...]

Good read, ecrivan...thanks!

right on Mirror man...I was going to delve into the issue of debating violence on campus but left it short of that...to encompass the larger picture.. the need to share opinions and accept others from minority groups is sadly falling behind...or have they ever been accepted.

I've been thinking on this, and it seems to me there is much more to it.  Like what Sunshine says, she enjoys the debate, but it's not so open any more.  In other words, you can talk about this (politically correct), but not that (politically incorrect).  And it ruins the spirit, and really the purpose of the whole thing.  I'm not into debating, but I know a lot of people are.  And you appear to be.  So I thought you might be interested in my abstract slant on this subject as you've presented it.

I'm not personally sure Arthur's debates were really debates.  But in any case, the reality was changed into a legend that was molded around Christian values: brotherhood, honesty, charity, and honor, not just on the battlefield but in personal life.  You talk about these things, but in a more concrete way.  Which is the way you think, so I'm not suggesting you change that.  However, your concept of Logres is very muted here, which seems to me not what you want to say.

You'll have to excuse me when I talk this way.  It's the only way I know.  Which is why I couldn't write anything like this poem.  At the same time, I agree with the concept, that there is repression here, and this is antithetical to the spirit of free speech.

I can't really make any suggestions about what to change, assuming you want to change anything.  But you might want to think about exactly those things in the Arthurian legend that would be politically correct and incorrect, because this is how it appears to me the way you think, and with your inclusion of the round table, what appears to me the thing you want to talk about.  And then you might want to consider how to transfer your conclusions to a practical situation such as this to illustrate your point, but without the concrete objects and direct anthropomorphism of these legends, which are the archaic symbols and modes.

In any case, this is not a criticism of the poem.  And it's not meant to be a suggestion that you even continue on this line.  It's just something I thought you might be interested in.

Martin, mirror man's comments are so deep that I think I'll just say that I enjoyed the poem, but not get into what I think is "politically correct" or "incorrect"...

(I do agree 100% with Karilea, though....."everybody seems to have and opinion nowadays, and everyone's opinion is the only one to listen to, in their opinion")

Agree with much of what you say. I used to be more of lover of 'free discourse' than I am now. I wanted to transport the ideal of the roundatable from the middle age legend  times to today and to todays values..and I am disapponted as to how far our views go even when they're expressed...or how muted many of use remain because we know of the limitations and taboos around. Guess I have become more sceptical of what others can see
even if they're 'open minded' and more critical of myself for not having taken other
inititiatives that would have made myself 'more worldly' years ago.
