The old year's finally going out. The new one's coming in.
So many thoughts come now to mind but where do I begin?
The year's been filled with up and downs, with good and bad times, too
And so I sit and reminisce as thoughts come into view.

I've made some friends, some enemies. I've done the best I could
But there are times intentions , though well meant, don't turn out good.
I only hope I have enriched the lives of those I've met
And, to the ones I've injured, I must live with the regret.

I've seen new family members come, applauded at each birth
And cried for those whose time had come to finally leave this earth.
I've seen my children take a giant step toward adulthood
Tried hard to fill them with advice with hopes it does some good.

My health has been quite good. There were a few days I was down
But other folks were much worse off and here I'm still around
And like my golfing buddies say when bad things come to pass
Life is good if we are still on this side of the grass.

I've loved. I've lost. I've loved again, refusing to stay down.
I've had my hopes high in the air and had them on the ground.
I've had emotions carry me and had them hold me back
Hurt feelings when I spoke too soon with wisdom that I lack.

There are some things I'd change, some things I'd redo, if I could
But wishin' for what cannot be does no one any good
So, with a wistful smile, I'll raise my glass and have a cold one
And hope the coming year's as kindly to me as the old one.
