Those tunes used to come completely through
but there were those subtle losses of chords
melodies that she often breezed through before
a mothers memories became fainter

here are some stages, some lose recall
other grow more fragile, take a fall
memory loss progressed...
names and places were next
you could see the distress
she'd ask about an uncle long gone
her mind struggled to remember a song
and when driven down a familar prairie road
she'd ask "now where does this lead to?"

So the next stop down the highway
was to be 'put' in a special home
spotted with lifeless bodies
bent over arm rests
but she'd keep her spirit up
as if she'd entered a grand hotel.

Many memories were already packed away
after a hand burn in the apartment
she could no longer stay
but feared at being put away
left most of her worldly possessions
memory loss meant slow regression.

she'd be good with the nurses
after a crisis...her vanity diminished
no longer minded living in a cubicle
adjustment meant life had another rule.

and the grand piano found a new place
childhood songs filled an empty space.

Oh Martin.....
This is so sad, but so beautifully written.
I felt the love from your heart in this one....
as well as many emotions "between the lines", Sir.
Thank you for sharing your heart.
