land of flora and fauna

basin cypress stand
as barren as your abandoned altar,
while moss-weaves dance
in silent testament;
I feel
your young girl melancholy
weeped in lotus sighs,
sweeping still
a warmer breath
on pelican wings;

ah, dear Bellefontaine,
your love ghost drifts
on simmer winds
over a muddy Atchafalaya;
you searched until you
found him..found him,
and a final,
eternal love
realized only
in the deaths of you
and your Monsieur Lajeunesse--
'twas a bittersweet ink
that penned your saddened tale;

perhaps someday,
among the pine bends
of your wind cries,
I too,
will pen of love found,
of love fulfilled--
and when I do
my dear Evangeline,
beneath a southern sky
we shall share
a ghost smile

(reference-Evangeline Bellefontaine and Gabriel Lajeunesse of Longfellow's Evangeline)

Beautiful phrasing, Sandpiper ... you've captured the essence of this tale, and woven it into a lovely and thought-provoking piece. Much enjoyed.

Best wishes,
/Kit

Hopefully, you are someone's "Sunshine of sweet Eulalie", without the exile's pleasure, pain and reverses.
