For Dina

You want to be just like them
Sticking close like a daughter
In charge like a big sister
Trying so hard to fit in,
Find your own place
In this square peg &
Loving it home...

You want to be the same
Tho the teens won't let you
But on you go
Undaunted, undefeated,
Unwilling to give up
Planting daisy smiles next
To total warfare frowns
Their angsty efforts often
Fly over your ever ready smile

Sometimes, they admire that...

And when a burning missle
Does hit & make you cry
You look to me for comfort
I feel so unworthy, little
namesake...

You're growing so fast
I'm afraid of missing a moment,
Minute or second explaining,
Training, but especially
Loving, protecting, & enjoying
Who you are today Because
Sooner or later, she'll go away
in search of a greater self...

Pre & teen aunts,
Could it be jealousy?
I reflect & worriedly ponder
Neglect
As high pitched accusations
Lash at my heart,
"You treat her better than me!"

Gee...

I've so much love in plain sight
In excess bottled up, stored away
For those inevitable rainny days
When once again I know it all
A willing cushion to break the fall
One day, they'll all see...

Still, I've been blessed
with good little you,
Your sister too & tho sometimes
A sentence is hard for you
To comprehend
You've helped me understand
It's not what you know,
But who...

Love and compassion flow gently in this. Guardianship (?) with unconditional love and understanding.

This is truely beautiful. Written sweetly, gently, and with an honesty too, that I see.
Still being a 'child' its quite a thinker for me

Wonderful, keep it up
A Happy and blessed new year to you and yours.
Always, Alyssa

I love the phrase "little namesake." I might have to steal that for personal use someday. Thank you.

Thanks everyone for your kind and thoughtful comments. I am Dina's guardian until her mother is able to get back on her feet.

Mikey, I'm glad that you liked that line. In my case, it is literal. "Dina" is a nick name I'd given her. She really is named after me. It gets a little confusing around the house sometimes on account of that.
