state of confusion

She gathers in the heather, rolls across meadows,
her songs heard clearly in the gloaming -
harsh, moaning arias of loss
caught in sister wind’s severed throat.

She lashes out in anguish, leaves her mark on Cypress trees,
they yield to her will where sea meets bluff,
carrying her voice high and shrill,

an out of tune piano’s absurd, highest notes,
ruthlessly banging at loosened windows,
catlike feet on creaking wooden floors:

witch of insomnia; chimera of the unresolved,
she stirs wicked smiles into a man’s interrupted dreams,
stretches her cold paws with claws extended.

She’ll haunt his winters well into spring
with ancient hurts she wants him to claim,
to accept her gift of guilt,

to writhe in her icy embrace with no warmth
of the wood fire, no peat to burn past midnight;
she’ll leave him bloodless.
