Oh Belittled Town of Bethlehem

How still we see thee lie.
No bells or whistles
no decorations or lights
no firework celebrations,
the tourist’s delight.

Excuse me please,
but I thought it was
supposed to be
the place to see
a baby’s crib,
not a show on MTV.

I’m not religious,
so don’t get me wrong,
It’s just that I’ve been there
and seen a bit of this throng
as they trample themselves
to see yonder crib spot
and haven’t a clue
as to what they’ve forgot.

Away in a manger
no crib for his head
no food in the cupboard
mom’s reputation is dead,
no hope and no future
cross hatched guns took that away,
and no one has noticed
this little baby today.
He reminds me of ole
what’s-his-name,
you know, the one in that tale
where stars winked in the sky
and three men in robes
stopped by to get high
on Love?
Oh little town of B.
How still
we see
the lie.

Sigh. That's really all I have to contribute. Sigh.

Have you seen the way Bethlehem looks today? There is an inflatable Santa standing on the empty main street, and the most often heard complaints are that the tourists haven't shown up, there are no fireworks scheduled, and no bright flashing lights. Oh holy night. Looks like a deserted Hollywood Blvd.

WOW!! You've got this right, such a shame that the true meaning of Christmas can't be seen over the beaming of all the Christmas lights nor heard beyond the hype and noise that has come to surround the holiday.
Wonderful piece of work here

Ruth, thank you for reading. Yes, it is sad to see that commercialism seems to be the primary focus.

Vandana, thank you so much. Peace.
