Perhaps not worth a second glance
that woman over there looking down
her ragged coat fastened with pins
her hair matted, dirty blond brown

Then with a shake of shoulder
she looked up at the darkening sky
and when I saw her upturned face
I realized that she was I

I pulled my car to a stop
gathered quick breaths in my chest
I turned to see again this ghost
hoping it was all in jest

But she stood where I had seen her
or rather I stood there on the street
she really was me, I realized
down to the scuffed shoes on her feet

Someone walked quickly past her
offering her a dollar or two
she refused, though she needed it
and I knew that was what she’d do

She shuffled off away from me
so I followed her progression
it wasn’t long before she became
this Christmas Eve obsession

She ended up in a park near town
and sat on a bench under a tree
I sat in my car for a long time
wondering if I should speak to me

She looked up then and smiled
I could see my own sadness there
could see the times I pushed away
all the people who gave me care

I wish I could say I drove off renewed
opened my heart to all who asked
but life doesn’t always end just so
when one lives life always masked.

Outstanding story, one to retell anytime of the year.
But for the grace.

I keep so close to myself that I am removed,
and like you I see her standing there...

You struck a chord that I'm not fond of playing,
but it rings so true and leaves me to ponder.

Happy Holidays to you Poet deVine~

Thank you for reading..this was born out of seeing a homeless woman and thinking 'there but for the grace of God'...and I thought. Hm...the muse kicked in just thankfully.
