This board, the ball, the darkened room.
Smell of sweat, cigars, cheap perfume.
Too much make-up and wrinkled gown
with a veil of lace covering her frown.

Mirror, mirror, these words once heard.
visions of witch, girl and blackbird.
Ouija, circle, held hands, blank stares
around the room, rickety chairs.

A man of shadow, darkened eyes
the guest of honor with one surprise.
His quest to find his lady fair
of flowing white gown, brunette hair

Her eyes of blue from out a dream
beneath a fall, a crystal stream.
Where love was made but once that day
and then she left, vanished away.

The Madam called, the board did move.
The young man sat, he would approve.
A ball of glass did show her face,
this belle of his, behind the lace.

Mirror, mirror from long ago
where is the fairest belle I know?
Tell this board, this wicked dame
whisper softly, I need her name.

A mist did fall upon the room
a cold dark spell of deepest gloom.
The woman moaned, the spell broken
until the ball did light in reckon.

Lenore the name, this most fair child.
A woman’s shape to drive men wild.
His heart in race of passion’s best
beat wild in chase against his chest.

He reached to feel, to touch the skin
of her, his prize, his want to win.
Upon the break the human chain
Lenore was gone, love lost again.

The Madam smiled an inward glow
that to his eyes it would not show.
Her prize his heart, for her to keep
and for all time, Lenore would sleep.
