around the track
once
twice
all night long
in the cold
in the rain
around I walk
purple shirts
scarved heads
smiles
and luminarias
some in honor of
some in memory

some gave a dollar
a check
small donations
or much needed prayers

I tried to raise
as much as I could
garage sales
hot dog sales
car washes

around the track
three times
four times
again and again
over and over
I would walk forever
never stoping
always trying
to reach that goal
of a cure

last year I bought two
in honor of
this year I'll buy two
in memory of

I hope they see me
I hope God lets them know
they are why I walk

I too have my own personal vendetta against cancer as I've known so many who have died from it. Very well written and thank you (thank you) for walking.

Quite a beauty poem for such a sad reality.

I unfortunately can relate to this poem due to a family history of cancer.

My son received a letter from his Kindgergarten teacher, asking him to remember her mom in his prayers, as she was still in the hospital.  She asked him to pray for God to help her back.

I was telling my husband, later, of the letter, with my six-year-old's ever-listening ears close by.  I said, "Mr. Smith's mother is very ill, she is still in the hospital."

My son, matter-of-factly said, "Oh, is it cancer?"

My six-year-old.

We do not have any friends or family members with cancer, and there is really little talk about this in our home, but what a life-jolting thing to hear him ask this.

Cancer is all around us.  Your poem reminds me to be thankful for the health we have and to continue to fight for a cure to this horrible disease.

I can remember when "cancer" wasn't something six-year-olds knew of.

***sigh***
