I am trying to locate a poem that I heard in my childhood.  I am not sure that I remember the words accurately.  I would appreciate it if you know this poem and would share your version with me, that you respond at your earliest convenience.  Thank you.  It went something like this. . .

Have you ever thought when the hearse went by, that you might be the next to die?
They wrap you up in a great big sheet and throw you down six thousand feet.
And everything’s quiet till ‘bout a week, until your coffin begins to leak.
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out.
The ants play pinochle on your snout.
Your stomach turns a greasy green and puss runs out like brown whip cream.
You sop it up with moldy bread and that’s what you eat when you are dead.

I am sure this is the one you are looking for and it is by Alvin Schwartz, called "The Hearse Song."  It is an old children's song, and I think this is how it went...

Don't you laugh when a hearse goes by,
For you may be the next to die.
They wrap you up in a big white sheet
From your head down to your feet.
They put you in a big black box,
And cover you up with dirt and rocks
All goes well for about a week.
And then your coffin begins to leak.
The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out
The worms play pinochle on your snout.
They eat your eyes, they eat your nose,
They eat the jelly between your toes.
A big green worm with rolling eyes
Crawls in your stomach and out your eyes.
Your stomach turns a slimy green,
And pus pours out like whipping cream.
You spread it on a slice of bread,
And that's what you eat when you are dead.

Well, other than being gross I think J Pettigrew did a great job!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
