The Glosa is an early Renaissance form that was developed by poets of the Spanish court in the 14th and 15th centuries. In a Glosa, tribute is paid to another poet. The opening quatrain, called a cabeza, is by another poet, and each of their four lines are used within your poem.

The opening quatrain (by another poet) is followed by four stanzas, each of which is generally ten lines long, that elaborate or "glosses" on the cabeza chosen. Each ending line (10th line) of the four following stanzas is taken from the cabeza.

The usual rhyme scheme of a glosa is final word rhyming of the 6th, 9th and the borrowed 10th lines.

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.

Another day slips into night.
One more mortal memory
Time lined - on life’s pages full.
The wisdom and growth of age
Treats me with a gentler touch,
A conclusive reality that I have found.
For I took too many wrong turns
…to not know this is right,
I appreciate that blessings abound,
Amazing Grace!…How sweet the sound.

Roads paved in sin and shame,
Enticed me from the paths of truth.
So many turns…from there to here,
Believe me, way too many choices
For one...with a fearful heart.
Somehow there was always toll - a fee
To pay and I would mislay that
Which I could not afford to lose.
This is knowledge gained in age I see
That saved a wretch like me!

For I am now fully aware
That I am not an empty house,
Accordingly I have opened wide
The windows of my soul.
For this, for me, His Son
…in thorns was crowned,
That I might live in a finer place,
No more a shack…for me
My temple is on sacred ground
I once was lost, but now am found.

I have stumbled blindly,
Thrashing in the dark
Beset with senseless worries,
Scared to reach out for life’s joy.
Yet somehow You made a connection
And touched me…how could that possibly be?
You took my fears and exchanged them
With a courage, I had never known
Then held a candle high, gave light, to set me free
Was blind, but now I see

How beautiful and how skillfully done.  It would be good to post in the Poetry Workshop for others to see how this is done.  I enjoyed your work very much.

SPIRIT:  Thanks for posting the rules of the Glosa as well as the inspiring poem that goes with it. I am not familiar with this style of writing and it is challenging.
It;s always great to learn something new!

Dear Spirit

This is a very unusual and clever way of writing poetry!

Thanks for the 'history' lesson!  I love it!

Hi Spirit.

I don't know why I haven't seen this before.  It is very challenging and I will have to take time to study this style.  Love, Joyce

Amazing!!! You got off to a Great start here in that I, of course, loved the Cabeza that you chose and you continued to impress and to challenge with what exuberance and emotion that you expressed in your Glosa.

Again, Amazing!!!
