All Saints Sunday

Acolytes light the candles
As the pastor reads each name
For newly dead or freshly baptized.
The candles look the very same.

I know some of the faces watching
Are glistening with tears
For newly born or just departed.
Age difference of a hundred years.

The youngest saint in row of candles
Has a life just now begun.
The eldest in the other long line
Died with years one hundred one.

There are lights for lives beginning,
The precious ones just come aboard
And lights for friends and loved ones
We've relinquished to the Lord.

We look fondly at each other
These loved friends we hold so dear.
We can't know whose name will be there
When the list is read next year.

Dear Joyce, this is deeply sensitive and beautiful. I know of tears due to the loss of a three year old this year … that’s tough. We believe with all our heart that all those we miss have found reason to rejoice back Home within God’s arms … but the pain is nonetheless there.
Love,
Margherita

Dear Margherita.  I am so sorry for the loss of your dear one.  I have been there too.  Proudly watching a candle in the first line or sadly listening for the other. Thank you for answering.  Love, Joyce

So well you've pictured the bitter-sweet of life in this lovely poem.  How thankful we are for the newborn babes and heartsick for those who've gone before us. Thank you for sharing.

God bless,
  Rae
