ROSES

Three hundred years after Christ's birth
Just south of Rome on fertile land,
Grew the sweetest queen of all flowers,
Roses cultivated by man.

The poet Horace once expressed
That roses were worth more than grain,
Seed fills a hungry man's stomach
Where roses feed his heart and brain.

Flourishing in ancient China,
Grown by monks for two thousand years.
Roses symbolized man's passion
For envy, sadness, love and tears.

Nero spent fortunes on roses
Whose petals showered down on his guests,
He wished to teach his subjects
That roses were an emperor's best.

So take down your shovels and plant,
Placing roses around your home.
For their sweet scent and great beauty
Are from heaven to us on loan.

Tom,

I enjoyed your short history lesson here on the rose. It certainly does have quite a most colorful and most fragrant history. I'm also reminded, as I know that you are aware, that Jesus is referred to as the Rose of Sharon. I've always been fond of roses and I've always had very good luck at growing them, but, unfortunately, my problem is more on the lines of keeping them properly trimmed and groomed. It's not that I'm negligent. It's just that I hate cutting them back when I know that something beautiful is about to bloom.

Smiles. Well, maybe, perhaps, I am a bit negligent, but I do enjoy them.

God bless.

Roses still are the biggest symbol of love flower.  What a joy it was to read this, Tom.  Also, thanks for the site of your readings.

We're going to try some climbing roses, since the rabbits ate about $450 worth of plantings we put in this year.  Perhaps the thorns will keep them at bay.

I love roses even more now

Without the experiance of love where would we be? We would have no memories to cherish.
With love it brings hurt with hurt bittersweet memories.

Roses have always been my favourite flower. Gorgeous poem, Tom, such a unique idea. You truly are a brilliant poet

Truth is truth...

roses are not easy to grow;
this every gardner knows;
but growing them is to grow some love;
and heaven pours rain from above
to water roses for our soul...

and this indeed, is heaven's goal.

The scent of a rose
holds stories and memories
to fill us with joy
This is very beautiful, thank you for sharing. How can we not love roses?

such a lovely simple and beautiful write
each color of a rose has a meaning all it's own. for exsample: Red=love, yellow= friendship, white= innocents, black= death
and so on.

This is very well written. I enjoyed reading it very much! My mother-in-law loved roses of any kind. My father in-law would pick the ones he raised for her and would bring them into her. Especially when she became sick. Roses made her day! You know just like a tree...GOD can only make a rose bloom...just like HE blooms in our hearts!

Nice poem with historical references as well....I liked how to brought to light the roses were more than just a mere beauty but used by man to cultivate the heart and mind. Nature has always had that affect on me. Great poem!
