Let me introduce you to my god
Its name is Marlboro
It condemns me, it owns me
It soothes, relaxes and unnerves me
My god is killing me

I don’t go a minute without it
It’s on my mind, my breath and in my grasp
It takes my money, my food,
My freedom and my life
My god is killing me

It reminds me of my desire, my need
My addiction, when I try to forsake it
It tells me I’m nothing without it
I am nothing with it
My god is killing me

It stains my walls, my clothes, my heart and my soul
It robs me of everything it promises to give
No joy, acceptance, endurance, courage or confidence
Instead it brings shame, sin and silence
My god is killing me

My god is not the true God
I’ve always known that to be true
So by the grace of Jesus, may it die today
Because it is killing me

A preacher once told me that smoking would not send me to hell, though it would make me smell like I'd been there.

While I don't believe smoking can truly shorten your life, i do believe it can ruin the quality of life in the years to come.It took me twenty seconds to take up smoking and twenty years to quit. With God, all things are possible.

AMEN.  I am going to keep on trying.  I loved your whole poem and everything you said.  I have always believed that the lord wouldn't let them harm me unless I allowed myself to believed they could.  But I want to quit now because my mind isn't strong like that anymore and I'm getting older now and I am feeling the effects of ill health.  Good write!

One year ago today my husband quit.
Its a hard habit to break but only if one truly wants to quit will they do it.
Enjoyed the read, good luck.

Your poem serves as a good wake-up call.

A friend of mine shocked me asking, "Did I tell you I got divorsed?"  As tears began to brim in my eyes, she laughed, "Not from Jim, just from cigarettes I'd been married to since my collage years."  I thought that was a strong example of the hold they get, but  the 'god' of one's life is even better.

Thanks for sharing.
