To Dream of a Much
Better Day

(Prose)

Having been gone to straight for the jugular
Here am I
Like an animal caged in its environment
Unable to move out of fear
Fear of the images that haunt my mind
That somehow the life support
In my neck might come loose
And Hope. Hope that the nurses are competent
To do their jobs correctly
Without failure, the button in my hand
Keeps the medication on flowing
Numbing my body and numbing my senses
To the anxieties that I have for escape
“Please, let this stay be short,” I pray
As day turns into night and night into day
And then I thank God for simple things:
Each time a catheter, a pump, a needle is removed
And when I can stand up on my own two feet
Breathe the air that I breathe and thank the nurses
That have been so kind. I thank God
For invention: the I V cart that makes me mobile
So I can walk the halls and pray
And pray I do for all of those suffering here and healing
As I am. I thank God for the hundreds of miles
Traveled by loved ones just to be here
And the thousands of miles traveled by phone
I thank God
For the simple words heard from my little child:
“Daddy, I love you.”
And in the stillness, late at night, when sleep
Is impossible, I thank God for the encompassing of
All the kind thoughts and prayers
From all of those who I know and all of those who I don’t
For from these I know
That Love is with me and God is with me
And, now, have I Peace
To Dream of a Much Better Day.

So many I have been around these last few weeks could have written this bit, and you certainly did it with heart.  To all in this position, I wish them all that they wish for themselves.

SEA,

Not a stupid question at all. Actually, it is quite a compliment because I did want this poem to be Real and Authentic to the emotions and the feelings that I had when I stayed at the hospital in which I had transplanted my pancreas and kidney. Through this poem, I wanted people to get a taste of what hospital life was like for me and I do want those who are in the hospital right now to know that there are those who have gone before and survived. I have been doing exceptionally well with no complications or signs of organ rejection for some time (about six years) and I guess that you could say that I am now living in a day that only once could be dreamed about. Thank you (Thank you) for your tender heart and for your love and for your true concern. I am OK... (Smiles) ...Really! -Bob

Mysteria,

I am so sorry that you have been spending so much time in hospitals as of late. I actually worked in one for awhile before I had my transplant. I do want to say though that I much appreciate your reaching out to those who are in the hospital and I much appreciate your reaching out to Rebecca (WhtDove) as well. I do know form first hand experience the power of, the need for, and the comfort received through prayer. May God bless you, my friend, and keep you ever strong as you continue to bless others who are truly in need of your love and affection. Amen. -Bob

Glad it wasn't stupid.... Mostly, I'm glad you are ok! You did write this as if it were a "now" kind of thing. I am sure that folks can read this and relate, be it with family, friends, or themselves. (((hugs)))

Dear Bob,  I just tuned in and got a big scare when I read your poem.  I am so glad it is from the past.  Some things are so big we never forget the details.  Glad you are whole and blessed this Christmas.  Love, Joyce

Joyce,

So true, some things are just to Big to forget... I thought that I had, but as I was considering Rebecca and her facing or have already faced transplant surgery, these memories came flooding back... They are not all bad memories though. There was so much to be thankful for during that time and I probably felt closer to God and to family and friends then than I ever have. It was a hard time, but it was also such a beautiful time of Trust and Faith. Thank you, my friend, and may you and yours truly have a Blessed and Merry Christmas. -Bob

Trillium,

Thank you. Yes, I am very very glad that this experience is in my past, but still my heart does go out to Rebecca and all of the others who are going through similar experiences in their lives. I do pray that one day she too will be looking back and living in a far better day. God bless you and again Merry Merry Christmas to you. -Bob

Only a very sensitive soul could have written such a touching poem that speaks of the fears and the gratitude so many experience when coping with illness.
Thank you for bringing hope to those who are in such situations right now.
I am so happy that you enjoy "better days".
Your grateful heart is tangible in your words.
Love and Merry Christmas again.

Margherita,

Thank you so very much for your many many words of commendation. This was certainly a very difficult time in my life, but that time did also give to me a much better and deeper appreciation for life and for others who are such a beautiful wonderful  part of it. I do hope that your Christmas was equally Merry and Blessed and Thank You again for your many kind replies. -Bob

Hello Bob, and everyone. Sorry I sort of dropped out of sight from this forum - got 'homesick' all of a sudden, and my mouse sort of cliked on the pipforum bookmark and here I am - my once favorite soul-watering hole.
A first read of your poem gave me a chill - reminded me when I too was in the hospital for a throat surgery. Glad this is all in the past for you.
I agree, going to be "under the knife" is a scary thought - but all that one can do is mentally and spirituallyput oneself in His hands. He is truly the Potter, and we are mere clay.

Have not written in ages, I don't know if I still can. Envy you guys for being prolific

jjote,

It's very very nice to hear from you too my poetess friend and we are both kind of in the same boat I guess because I was gone for about a year to heal from Diabetic Retenopothy (Blindness) and have just returned. I also wondered if I could still write, but I just got out the ol' keyboard and did it and it does seem to me anyway that all is doing ok. Maybe if you just give it a try all will be ok with your ability to create and write as well. The poetic muse seems to still be around and working just fine. (Smiles) I do agree with your comment about mentally and spiritually putting ourselves in God's hands. Hospital stays are certainly a test of our trust in not only God but the doctors, medical help, medicines and technology, etc. etc. It truly is amazing to me what miracles can be done today in the medical field. It's just amazing. Anyway, it was Great to hear from you again and please please don't stay away too long. -Bob

Mysteria,

It truly is for opportunities like this that I sooooo love to write poetry. What a wonderful wonderful blessing to be able to bless someone else. You are such an angel, my friend, to have the insight and compassion to take this poem of my past experience and share it in this manner as to hopefully encourage someone who might be going through a similar situation in life. I do love how much you care and think of others. You have such a beautiful beautiful spirit. Sharon, Thank you. -Bob
