This poem is based upon a rather interesting meditation I had as I was working the other day.  My boss is a rather harsh Christian, in that he tends to look more on the punishing aspects of God and on the sort of salvation by works way than on the faith and works salvation of many Christians.  He has a rather thick Dutch accent, reminding me a lot of my older relatives who used to tell me of God.  Usually their claims about Him were not very good, and I was left almost hating Him.  He was painted as a vengeful being in the sky, just another disciplinarian like my relatives, quick to anger at his children, wanting to stir fear and terror in their hearts as a means of disciplining them.  My anger at this often hypocritical view of God is what prompted both my meditation and my writing of this poem.

Thou shalt not
spare the rod
spoil the child

We thank thee for thy word
Bless the reading of thy word
to our souls

   A cold voice, thick accent
Reads the words utters the prayer
By rote as if it were a computer
   Taking its next instruction,
   Executing the program,
   Saying the words.

Commit then to the flames any
work which doth not speak directly
unto the glory of God the Father,
and His Holy Word, as revealed
in the king's Holy English of 1611.

   I was a child once
The thick voice spoke down to me
   Shivering my bones
   Issuing forth blackened fear,
   Consuming my blood.

   He told me of God
Thus spake the Lord God to me
   And I shivered
And I drifted from the Truth
   Unto human fear.

  And then I saw him
whipped and beaten,
  thick cold voices speaking
down upon his frail body.
Thou shalt not spare the rod
I hate thee and spare no
    strength in scourging thee

I saw the waves of anger all about
Coursing through the putrid sea of thought
But on those angry waters stood a man,
A phantom being here to rescue me
Pleading that I should fix my gaze upon
His whitened, pure, and resurected form.
"I love you too much to do as those men say."

And the anger and the fear became a sadness,
And the waves became a placid ocean of tears.

The angered face and the thick accent
             were lost.
God spoke to me in a calm thunder and all
             was silent.

Dear Freind,

I was so afraid to open this poem, not knowing what I was going to find.

I was a lucky child who only heard about a loving God from my own loving parents.  I have never been able to bear hearing his name taken in vain.

I understand your poem however and see how frightening God could be when presented in such a stern and unloving way.  I am glad you have learned to find his greatness in your own way.  Your poem was well done and touching.  Love, Joyce

Sad to have such a harsh presentation of the loving Father- that I think so many have experienced.

Thanks for sharing this.
