IF we can still wake up and gaze in childlike awe
at clear blue skies, then run barefoot on sandy beach,
unmindful of the cold of early morning spring,
and soak our toes at water’s edge, shivering.

IF we can listen to the crashing of the surf,
the ceaseless call of hungry gulls as they fly low
and not conjure emotions dark and boding ill.
as we look up at sunlit clouds beyond the hill.

IF we can stop to smell the roses freshly cut,
then gorge in wonder at the riot of fall’s colors,
as we walk through the woods, with spirits light and free,
to catch the leaves as they drop softly off a tree.

THEN WE shall fear no longer unseen terrors, wearing
evil masks behind the faces they display,
and we can watch our kids blow white fluff from the flowers
to wish on, to dream on, to build their own life’s castle towers.

(tears fall down my cheeks) God Bless You, sweet Josefina, we all should treat each other like brothers and sisters as we all are sons and daughters of Him and if we can just love then all will be beautiful! (wipes tears) I keep praying for this special day of harmony, dearest friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Josefina, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Oh, you've brought back a childhood memory with your poem here and I will need to do this again as soon as they come out... (YAY!!!) I used to make wishes upon a dandelion flower and then blow its seeds into the air. Your poem inspires such wonderful contemplations of being childlike again and gives your reader here if only a brief and needed moment, yet still a wonderful break, from the current and most tragic terror felt in our world and grown-up lives today. I like how you've mixed the best, I think, of two worlds here... the rhyming world and the free verse world. Good job. Very happy to see your name here again and to vote for your lovely poem. God bless.

I really don't know (to Bob)if I followed any kind of meter/rhyming pattern here - the words flew off their own accord (hehe) - couldn't stop them - so (shrugging), who's lookin'?? But thanks anyway for the helpful comments.

Thanks also to the rest of you guys/gals for your votes and for reading. Just wish I could be here more often to read all your poems...

This one is for sure for the book.  A wonderful write and a wonderful way to remind us what is truely important.  You have my vote for sure and I love the title.  That is what drew me in to begin with.

Josefina, this is one of the nicest and most relevant poems I have read.It puts many things into perspective, makes one wonder why there is such hatred and destruction, and burns all down into the simplicity of appreciation of the world and its peoples.
Incredibly eloquent and true. This is most certainly receiving my vote and is being saved in my special "vault".Just beautiful.

This is an absolutely beautiful reminder to take a moment to stop and appreciate the smaller things in life and a poignent reminder that the world is only what we make of it. Well deserving of print. Beautiful job
