Old Hymns

Old hymns we sang in years gone by,
Created such a family tie.
Each member had a favorite song.
The congregation sang along
And angels watching from the loft,
All joined in with voices, soft.
At least I used to think they did,
When I was just a little kid.

I grew up with a list of these
That comforted as well as pleased
And seemed to forge a bond with He,
For whom we sang so joyfully.
I think about the vaulted dome
Where all these old hymns made their home
And how we'd gather there to praise,
With eager voices that we'd raise.

All music sung for God is blessed,
But I still like the old hymns best!

(With thanks to friend Don for the inspiration)

You touched a cord in me with this one! I love gospel music, and especially praise and worship music.
The old hymns are such an important part of it all.
Enjoyed your poem much!

Deb:  I'm so glad you enjoyed this poem and I feel as you do.  I like the modern music too, but the old pieces still move me more.

Noah:  Thanks for commenting and I'm glad to hear you also enjoy the old hymns. I guess because they are old, they have become a tradition and singing them makes us feel our ties to the past.

Trillium,

I attend a church that is focused on reaching youth for Christ, so many of the songs that we sing are the modern songs that are being played on the radio today along with songs that are fresh off the press and assembled by our 17 year old praise and worship leader.... I said all of that to lead into this.... I feel like one of the elders who saw the new Jerusalem built and I am well pleased to hear the youth of today rejoicing as they do, but still, like you, I know and remember the old Jerusalem and what it was like when God's presence first filled the temple and I am still moved and deeply touched by the hymns of old.   God bless you my friend for I so appreciate you and your wonderful poems.

Bob:  Thank you for your remarks. I know that the "modern" churches are reaching so many who would not respond in the same way, if the old traditional methods were in place and of course, I am very happy to see what is happening.  I just respond so differently to the older hymns because I grew up with them and they are such a part of my life. My children go to new Christian Outreach churches and I know they enjoy them and feel they are receiving God's blessings and I'm sure they are. I have gone a few times and while it was a joyous experience, it didn't satisfy my longing for the old way of worship. To each his own, I guess.

Thanks too for your very nice compliment. It means a lot to me.
